The weddings of today are a lot different in many ways than the weddings of yesteryears. The dresses come in more variations now, venues other than the church for the wedding ceremony are in vogue now and even the wedding reception menu has changed considerably. Young couples are much bolder and they prefer to try newer things in their wedding ceremonies. This is the same with wedding cakes. These young couples try out different colored cakes now. Some even try multi colored cakes. The overall scene on the surface looks like people don’t care about traditions anymore. However there are still a lot of people among the younger generation who prefer to have old fashioned, traditional wedding ceremonies even now. These people want everything traditional as per the book, even their wedding cakes. They want to have white wedding cakes for their wedding day.
So what is with the color white that these young people want to have white colored cakes on their wedding day? There is a lot of history behind these white colored cakes. In almost all cultures and races across the world, the color white denotes purity. White has a virginal innocence to it. This symbolism could be related to the white colored icing found on wedding cakes during the Victorian period. Another fact could be that during the olden times, the wedding cake was called the bride’s cake and hence the color white denoted purity and chastity of the bride. Since the color white was brought about by the presence of white colored sugar icing crystals and sugar being expensive those days, the white colored wedding cakes denoted the affluence of the family of the bride.
White is making a comeback now and one can now see many families opting for white colored wedding cakes. Whether it is tradition or symbolic, white colored wedding cakes are perhaps the best when it comes to bringing the romance back into marriages.
