Though there are several factors that play a part in determining wedding cake prices, the key factor remains how big or small the cake is. Based on the number of servings that a cake contains, its price is decided. A simple serving of an ordinary cake may cost only $1.50 while a more elaborate, designer cake may need you to shell out anything between $6 and $10.

Some important factors that determine the price of a wedding cake based on per-serving are:

  • Level of difficulty to assemble: Though wedding cakes having 2 or 3 tiers are considered standard, you will need to pay higher costs if you want more layers or designs that consists of fountains, intricate figurine placements or multiple layer separations.
  • Type of cake: If you are looking for the least expensive category of cake, the sponge cake will be an ideal bet. Pound cakes are slightly expensive as they are denser and need some precautions while they are assembled. When it comes to an expensive cake belonging to the basic category, cheesecakes make the cut.
  • Flavor of cake: Basic flavors like chocolate, red velvet, classic white or marble cake are relatively easy on the pocket, while other options that are comparatively more elaborate like German chocolate, carrot or black forest belong to the cakes of mid-range cost. The most costly cakes are gourmet flavors like tiramisu, liqueurs and mocha.
  • Number of Flavors: Cakes having different flavors for every single layer are costlier than the ones that have a uniform flavor.
  • Filling Flavors: The least expensive options are the basic icing fillings. This is especially true if the basic icing fillings match the cake’s outer icing. However, you will need to shell out more for cakes that have more labor-intensive fillings of crushed fruit, nuts or liqueurs.

Apart from these factors, the shape of a cake and its design intricacies also play a role in how much the cake will cost.
