Out of the entire range of beautiful wedding cakes, castle wedding cakes deserve a special mention for their fairy tale resemblance. The use of castle shaped cakes for wedding and other special social occasions was originally a French tradition. The structure of castle adds special ambience to the cake’s design and makes them come alive with artistic details. Generally, castle wedding cakes are created by using styrofoam and can be pearl dusted, painted, and airbrushed. Mostly styrofoam is used in making these cakes as it can be cut in shape easily and frosted easily.
Castle wedding cakes often make use of a cone made of cream puffs that’s full of French pastry cream. These cakes are coated with caramelized sugar and their decoration generally consist of marzipan roses that are made petal wise one after another.
In most of the castle wedding cakes, real tiers are used for their base to offer better strength to the cake’s structures. These tiers can be oval, round or of square shaped. The tiers are stacked on each other in descending sizes and the biggest of the tiers are placed at the bottom of the cake. Generally, up to three tiers are seen in castle wedding cakes and the castle is placed on the third tier. The castle is mostly made of cardboard, styrofoam or some other non-toxic non-edible items. However, making an entire castle out of a cake is difficult to mange because the structure is hard to build on a soft material like cake.
There are several types of castles used in castle wedding cakes. The most popular castles out of this entire range are the mediaeval ones with drawbridge, and fairy tale castles with horse drawn coach. The top part of the castle is always covered by icing. If it is preserved in a cool dry place, you will be able to preserve it for a long time to come.
